We don't usually do commercials here, but this one definitely merits an exception. Our own Karee Blunt and her sister, Lisa, have started a business called BuildAMenu.com. The "press release" below from Karee explains how it all works in detail. After almost two years of research, planning and finally development, my sister and I have finally launched our new business and we’re so excited to tell everyone about it! After choosing meals for the week, just click Build A Menu to get a customized grocery shopping list, broken down by category (Produce, Meats, Frozen, etc). You’ll also get all your recipes ready to print for easy reference when you’re ready to cook that week.

One super neat feature on the website is the Build A Menu calculator. It shows you approximately how much your groceries are going to cost as you add each recipe. (That way, you’ll know if you need to choose a few of our less expensive recipes to complete your weekly menu plan.) A very cool way to help you stay within your grocery budget!

We offer meal plans that serve 4-6 people, as well as plans that serve 1-2 people. We even have a “Crowd Pleasers” menu that serves 8-10 – great for larger families, or for planning meals for company, potlucks, etc.

Our goal is for our website to be a blessing to people in three ways: by helping families easily stick to their grocery budget (we know this can be very difficult to do!), by encouraging families to bring mealtime back to the dinner table, and by donating part of our proceeds to the orphan care charities we’ve chosen (you’ll want to read the About Us page to know what that’s about). Andy & Cathi Adams: "Prayer for our children: Cati is still struggling with medication issues and not feeling well. Andrew had a good week back at O.C. but is having trouble with memory and concentration due to his brain injury. It should improve with time. Melissa had an MRI this week to see if there was a tear in her shoulder socket. She is in a lot of pain. We should find out this week if they need to do a surgical repair. Thank you!

Prayers for Jamie Briskey

Prayers for Elmer Juntenen, who was hospitalized for two days recently. He has been experiencing severe pain in his side. Medical tests did not reveal a cause; his doctor has diagnosed it as a pulled muscle which will have to be allowed to heal itself over time.

Prayers for Andrew Adams who is flying back to Oklahoma Saturday to return to school. Praise God that he has healed enough to return to school! Prayers also for Melissa -- she is home, in a lot of pain -- doctors say that it may not get much better, but we must continue to pray for healing, as we believe God's healing powers is greater than the doctors'!

The Skagit Valley Church of Christ will have services today on our regular schedule: Bible classes at 9:30 a.m., morning worship assembly at 10:30 a.m. and evening worship assembly at 6 p.m. While today is a special day for families, it remains the Lord's day and we want to give Him the place He deserves in our lives.

Don Oelze, preacher for the Fidalgo Island Church of Christ in Anacortes was hospitalized in Anacortes Tuesday afternoon after having an incident of confusion and memory loss Tuesday. Tests are being run to determine what happened. He did not have any physical impairment and his confusion cleared up after a while. Please keep him in your prayers.

Karen Hasenoehrl offered several prayer requests: for healing for her friend Shirley, for the seriously ill grandfather of Ethan's friendCarson, for Karen to be an encourager, for her to have a good attitude as her divorce proceeds, and for Betsy who needs a job.

Thought for Today: No Place of Safety?

Flomaton is a sleepy little town on the Alabama-Florida border, about 50 miles from the Gulf Coast. Travelers headed down I-65 for the Northwest Florida beaches usually exit at Flomaton. I have passed by the Flomaton Church of Christ building numerous times, but don't think I ever met with the church there for worship.

Something out of the ordinary happened there during evening services this past Sunday. A man, unknown to the church members, came in just before the service got underway and sat near the back. During the opening prayer, while eyes were closed and heads bowed, the visitor grabbed the purse of one of the women worshipers and ran for the door. Church members chased him to the parking lot, but he threatened them by claiming to have a gun. He jumped into his Toyota Corolla and sped away.

One advantage of being a small town law enforcement officer is that policemen know their criminal element. Police Chief Geoff McGraw suspected that he knew who the culprit might be. He went to the suspect's house and obtained permission to search the man's car, where he found a bank statement that had fallen from the victim's purse. The robber is now in jail facing felony charges. When he confessed to police, he said he had been smoking crack and ran out of money to buy any more.

Perhaps the message for us is that in this ole sinful world, no place is truly safe. While this does not rise to the level of gunmen opening fire in church assemblies (as has happened a few times in recent years), it is disconcerting to think that a church visitor might really be there to steal our property while our attention is focused on praying to the Lord. There is no sanctuary, even in the church auditorium.

The only place we are truly safe is with the Lord.

Next Sunday, the names of three men will be presented to the congregation as men the Business Meeting of the church recommends as our new elders. Any member of the congregation then will have two weeks to present any scriptural objections to any of these men becoming an elder. This process is expected to culminate with the appointment of a new eldership early in the new year.

It was great to have brothers and sisters from Skagit Valley, Mount Vernon, and Anacortes congregations joining together in number to praise the Lord in song this afternoon at the Mount Vernon building. Andrew Adams has made some improvement. He is still in ICU in Ogden, UT, but is alert (when medication wears off enough to allow it) and breathing on his own. He is able to move his legs and arms. Melissa is hospitalized in Salt Lake City. She has been in a lot of pain and has pretty severe swelling, but her overall condition is good and doctors are hopeful that she will be well enough to be released from the hospital by the weekend. I just talked with Andy Adams. Andrew and Melissa were injured in a one-car accident in Utah this morning. Andrew is in critical condition in an Ogden, UT hospital with serious head injuries. He is now in a medically-induced coma. Melissa has injuries, but they are not thought to be life-threatening. Please keep them in your fervent prayers.

Andy and Cathi will be flying to Salt Lake City as soon as they can get a flight.

Further update about Melissa: She was injured more seriously than first reported. She has a broken neck and broken ribs, but her condition is not considered life-threatening at this time. She is hospitalized in Salt Lake City, UT.

Allen Hill's sister is recuperating from knee surgery.

Elmer Juntenen is back living at home with around-the-clock care. He is still having serious back pain, but is in much better spirits.

Melissa Adams will be going on a mission trip to Ecuador in two weeks. Please pray for the group's safety and success in their work. Cathi Adams is having some health problems with dehydration following her recent surgery. Also, Melissa asks for prayers for her grandmother, Ann Dale, and for her friend who has a cornea transplant scheduled in two weeks.

Praise the Lord that Ann Dale (Cathi Adams' mother) is home and feeling better. She is feeling sick from her chemotherapy, though.
Please keep Jim Gibbs, Kyla, and the kids in your prayers. They will most likely be calling in Hospice this week. Jim seems to be more at peace with this than he has in the past -- please pray for continued peace, strength, and comfort for all of them. Also Karee will be taking some snack foods up this week for the kids. If you would like to help with a donation, please contact Karee Blunt.
Please pray for Tom & Judy Fair at the passing of Tom's cousin in Ohio. Praises that David and Casey are back with us today.

Sunday Morning Services

We will have services as scheduled Sunday morning. We did not get the warming and melting today that we had hoped for so roads may still be treacherous in some areas. Please be careful in traveling and, as always, use your own best judgment about whether or not it is safe for you to drive.

No decision has been made at this point about whether or not we will meet Sunday evening.

Our Chili Cook Off and Talent Show was a good success this afternoon. Jim Wilkison won the top prize in the chili cooking competition (best chili). Andy Adams' entry was judged spiciest and Ethan Hasenoehrl's was blandest. Madeline Blunt was earned first place in the talent show. Congratulations to everyone who participated.

Speaking of competition, our worship services tomorrow morning will be competing with the Seahawks playing in the NFL playoffs against the Bears in Chicago. Surely no one needs any help making the right choice about where to be at 10 a.m. tomorrow! In case you find yourself wavering, ask "What would Jesus do?" No matter if you're a big Seahawks fan or not, this ought to be an easy question.

Dorwan Stoddard, an active member of the Mountain Avenue Church of Christ in Tucson, AZ was killed in the supermarket shooting (where Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was seriously wounded). According to reports, he threw himself in front of his wife, Mavy, when the shooting started. A fatal bullet struck him in his head. His wife was hit by bullets in her legs, but is expected to recover. Please remember her and all of the Stoddards' blood family and their church family as they undergo this traumatic experience. Also pray for the recovery of Representative Giffords and the others who were injured or killed in the shooting.

Follow-up about Marge

Trish and I visited Marge Easley in Skagit Valley Hospital this afternoon. She said she had wanted to keep the news from church folks so no one would worry about her, but I think she was glad to know that people were praying for her. She fainted Monday, falling and giving both her eyes nice shiners. She also cut her nose, resulting in profuse bleeding apparently. The good news is that she was not seriously injured. She called 911 because she called her doctor and they told her that it was not safe for her to drive herself to the hospital after having fainted. She is being kept in the hospital while the doctors run tests trying to find the reason for her fainting. Perhaps she will be able to go home Wednesday, depending on what the tests show.

Remember to invite at least five guests for our Homecoming next Sunday.

Will you participate in the Light into the Darkness campaign to read the New Testament through between now and the time we return to Daylight Savings Time next March 13? You need read only 15 chapters per week to accomplish that goal. It takes very little of your time; just a consistent commitment to spend five minutes or so each day reading the Bible.

Family Harvest Party - October 30

We had some sign-up sheets in the hallway at church; unfortunately, due to some severe pain issues I have been having, I haven't been to church to check those sign-up sheets.
If you signed up for something on the sign-up sheet, please e-mail and let me know what you signed up for.

If you have NOT signed up already, I'm sure you're wondering, "HOW CAN I HELP?"Thank you for asking!! Your help & support will be a great blessing to us!!

There are several ways to help:
1. Sign up to help with an activity station. (more info. below)
2. Bring some needed supplies (plain sugar cookies, frosting, sprinkles, donuts, roasted pumpkin seeds).
3. Make a monetary donation to help cover expenses for prizes & supplies.
4. I need someone to make a gift basket for the adult costume prize winner.
5. We will need some help setting up & decorating on the day of the party.

THREE THINGS TO REMEMBER:1. Wear a costume! There will be prizes for kids & adults!
2. If you want to join the pumpkin carving/painting, you need to BRING YOUR OWN PUMPKIN (and your favorite carving supplies if you wish!).
3. PLEASE TELL US HOW MANY KIDS YOU ARE BRINGING. We are handing out special treats at the end of the party, and we want to have enough for all the children.

This is for the whole family...bring your kids, grandkids and friends!

This year's party is being planned a little differently and we need your help so it will run smoothly! Most of the activities will take place in the auditorium. The exceptions will be the MAZE, created by Jacob in the kitchen; and the Pumpkin Carving/Painting in the foyer. The doors to the auditorium will open at 6:00 P.M.

The kids will rotate to different stations from 6:00 to 7:15. At 7:15 we will have some races and then end at 8:00 p.m.
We need people to supervise stations from 6:00 to 7:15. All supplies will be provided.

The activity stations are:
1. Pumpkin Carving (for adults & older kids w/parent permission) and Pumpkin Painting for younger kids
2. Decorate A Cookie--frosting & sprinkles to make a cookie to take home
3. "Don't Let Satan Blow Your Light Out"--shooting out a candle flame w/a water gun!
4. "Lazarus" -- see who can wrap Lazarus the fastest with toilet paper!
5. "David & Jonathan" -- archery competition
6. "Peter Walks on Water" -- another water gun competition!
7. "Fear Not" -- create a monster (craft)
8. "Bread of Life" -- donut eating contest!

We will not hand out candy at every station. Each child will have a special treat bag with not only candy, but other special treats to take home at the end of the party.

A refreshment table will be set up...bring you favorite Fall treats!

Allen Hill has been told he has a problem with a disc in his back. He was scheduled to have a consultation with his doctor Thursday about treatment options.

Bob Sell is home and continuing to improve as he undergoes therapy.

Karee Blunt was sick and not feeling able to come Wednesday night. There have also been some paperwork snags in the Blunts' adoption of the baby in China. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon, but they need our prayers for them, for baby Sophie, and for those handling the adoption process both in the U. S. and in China.

Thanks to everyone who came and participated in the Area-Wide Singing this afternoon. The singing was hosted by the Fidalgo Island church of Christ in Anacortes, but held at Skagit Valley's building. Bob Sell Baptized Saturday Afternoon

Bob Sell was baptized by Rodney Blunt Saturday afternoon in Everett. Bob is undergoing rehabilitation as he recovers from a stroke. He is doing well, but expects to be in rehab about two more weeks. Rejoice over Bob's baptism and welcome him into our family at Skagit Valley Church of Christ. Bob is excited about coming to church again as soon as he is able.

"I got a phone call from my sister-in-law, Donna Mackey, this morning asking for prayers...her son, Nathan, is having an emergency appendectomy today and she covets our prayers. Also another relative, Mike Provencher, got hit yesterday while bicycling. He has 4 broken vertebrae, a collapsed lung among other broken bones, cuts and abrasions. He's in ICU and the next 48 hours will be critical. His wife is Shirley and she really needs our prayers, too.

Donna will keep me updated and I will pass all news on to you. Please do lift up these precious men to our Lord in prayer this week."

Also we received an email this morning that Dr. William Woodson is seriously ill, on life support, and not able to communicate with his wife and family. Brother Woodson was a long time Bible professor at Freed-Hardeman and Lipscomb universities in Tennessee as well as a preacher and author. He is in his mid-to-late 70s and lives now in Lawrenceburg, TN. He was diagnosed with cancer recently and was scheduled to begin chemotherapy. He needs our prayers.

FAITH FAMILY FINANCIAL SEMINAR. Space is available for 7 couples to meet on four Thursdays in October from 7-8:30 p.m. We will work through actually creating a budget, creating individual plans to become debt free, and learning how to manage family stewarship planning. Bob Sells

Bob and Wanda Sells attended SVCoC in the past. Here is a note from Wanda about a serious health problem Bob is experiencing. She requests our prayers for him:

Bob suffered a heart attack this Saturday three weeks ago and the following Monday he had a stroke, he was at Skagit Hospital for five days then they transferred him to Swedish where he is now. They just transferred him to Rehab and today just started working with him. He is paralized on his left side since his stroke was on the left. He can move some of his left arm and has not been able to move his left leg. They have high hopes for him and so do I he is a very determined man when he sets his mind.

Results of the heart attack is congestive heart failure so he will be put on a special diet. I am staying in Seattle in order to be close with him, Please pray for Bob, my thanks to you all.

Martha Juntenen is not doing well. She is now under hospice care and seems to be losing strength. Please keep her, Elmer, and their family in your prayers.

Casey Picinich is recovering from a cyst removal. All went well with the procedure.

Casey's grandmother has a broken hip and will have surgery on Friday.

Jim Gibbs (friend of the Blunt family) had a bone marrow biopsy. Results will tell whether or not further treatment is possible for him.

Please pray for our unemployed (Craig Pitner, Allen Burke, and Trevor Hasenoehrl) as well as everyone looking for jobs.

Becky Williamson asks prayers for herself in dealing with her mom, with worry and tension, and adjusting to new conditions. She also asks prayers for her son Robb Williamson who had oral surgery today, and for his healing and stress relief.

Sunday is 2nd Sunday, so it's our normal time for a church potluck meal. Bring food for your family plus a little extra for guests and we'll enjoy a time of fellowship and eating together after services Sunday. There will be a brief congregational meeting immediately after the morning worship assembly and before the meal. After we eat, we will have a time of congregational singing. We will not have evening services this Sunday.

Our paved parking lot is scheduled for repair and sealing and re-striping Thursday-Saturday of next week (July 15-17th, weather permitting). It will be usable on Sunday, the 18th so no regular services are affected. However, anyone visiting the building during the work period should park either on the gravel lot in front or next door in the Little School parking lot.
